HOW IT WORKS

~ On-Demand Courses ~

To access our on-demand courses, all you need is a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
You'll need access to Zoom in order to participate in our live webinars.

Just as in our one-to-one and small group tutorials, our focus when creating our on-demand courses is not solely towards exams: we aim to equip you for your future studies, your future careers, and for problem-solving in your everyday lives.

We hope to make you feel genuinely clever, and to bring a quiet confidence to your STEM skills. We do away with the tips and tricks that you might have been taught, and instead we lay down solid foundations. This strong anchor point underpins more advanced techniques as you continue your STEM learning journey. We model mathematical thinking at every opportunity and we put the scaffolding in place for you to practise it yourself, too.

What you need:
  • A computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Always consider screen size, though; phone screens can be too small for some students.

  • Access to the video-conferencing app Zoom if you wish to watch our live webinars (for Octahedron and Dodecahedron members). Our webinars are also available to watch on-demand via our website after they have been delivered live, without any need to use Zoom.

  • Webcam and microphone are not essential: most interaction during our webinars is via the text-only chat box.

  • Stable Internet 'WiFi' connectivity.

  • A free PDF viewer: for example, PDF-XChange Editor or Adobe Acrobat Reader.

How to get the most from our On-demand Courses:

Whether you have a dedicated study area with dual computer screens, or a phone in your hand while on the garden swing, how you interact with our on-demand courses is entirely up to you. We advocate liberal use of the pause button when you need a little more time to think, the back button if something didn't quite land for you on first listening, and the replay button if you don't feel comfortable with a topic by the end of a video lesson. Our courses are packed full of content, so don't be perturbed if you feel that a course warrants repeating; a second viewing often brings with it new insights and a greater depth of understanding.

All our on-demand courses also include downloadable PDF worksheets. These form an integral part of each course and we encourage everyone to have a go! They can be viewed on-screen using any (free) PDF application, or of course they can be printed out. All our worksheets come with fully worked solutions.

Our worksheets steer clear of mundane, repetitive practice: there is sometimes a place for repetition, but there is also a plethora of free resources available online which provide exactly that. Instead, we aim to make you think, and to provide guidance and hints on the worksheets themselves to signpost your direction of thought. We are huge advocates of the word YET: if you can't answer some of the questions YET, then fear not. We aim to keep you in your Learning Zone, and not to leave you sat idly in your Comfort Zone.

Our Vision:

We do not believe in the educational strategy of "teaching to the test". Imparting methods intended solely to improve your performance in an examination, rather than to genuinely enhance your understanding, is folly! Nevertheless, for many of our students, secondary school exams are a necessary stepping stone, and we understand that. We always target a level of mastery that turns anxiety-inducing exams into fun challenges, and all our courses continually encourage and challenge students to attempt exam questions: you do not need to be 15 going on 16 to have success with - and learn from - past exam questions.

We are based in the UK, and consequently many of our courses are delivered with KS3 (ages 11-14) and GCSE / IGCSE (ages 14-16) students in mind. That said, maths is a universal language; so, wherever you reside, and whether you are just stepping into your journey beyond numeracy or are a long-suffering survivor returning to banish your maths gremlins, you will find value in our courses.

As our course menu grows, we will also venture into real-world mathematics, thereby offering our students the chance to develop their 'Maths Eyes'. Maths is all around us, but all too often, students struggle to see it. The words, "I don't know why I need to learn Maths," are surely a bullet to our hearts. We look at familiar things in a different way, and identify fun problem-solving opportunities along the way.

Alongside all the maths, Michael doubles up as your study coach, sharing personal hints and tips for learning refined through years of teaching, as well as offering broader careers mentorship. He shares occasional insights from his 'other life' as a full-time Project Engineer at HORIBA MIRA to provide inspiration, to give context, and to help students envisage some tangible goals of their own.

We hope that your inner mathematician is inspired by our on-demand courses, and that by the end of each, you feel excited and eager to explore your next one!
